The Dirt on Maintenance Pro Tip #4: 7 Simple Track Tension Tips to Extend the Life of Your Machine
7 Simple Track Tension Tips to Extend the Life of Your Machine
Whether you're working in the field or on a jobsite, your track loader's performance depends on one key factor that’s often overlooked—track tension. Ignoring it can lead to downtime, costly repairs, and premature wear. But the good news? It's easy to manage with a little knowledge and support from your trusted Bobcat service team.
Here are seven practical track tension tips to help you stay ahead:
1. Check Track Tension Weekly
Just like checking tire pressure on your car, track tension should be inspected at least once a week. Conditions like mud, sand, or gravel can cause your tracks to loosen more quickly—so inspect them even more often in challenging environments.
2. Follow the “1-Inch Rule”
A good rule of thumb: with the machine on a flat surface, press down on the track midway between the front idler and the rear roller. You should see about 1 inch of deflection. If it’s tighter or looser than that, it's time for an adjustment.
3. Don’t Over Tighten
Running your tracks too tight increases wear on your undercarriage, idlers, and drive motors—and reduces your machine’s efficiency. If you hear squeaking or the machine feels sluggish, you might be over-tensioned.
4. Don’t Run Loose Either
On the flip side, loose tracks can derail mid-job, damage rollers, or even cause safety hazards. If your track looks saggy or if the machine feels unstable, take a closer look.
5. Clean Tracks Before Adjusting
Before making any adjustments, remove any mud, debris, or rocks that could impact your reading. Built-up material in the undercarriage can lead to false tension readings—or worse, equipment damage.
6. Know How to Adjust Properly
Most Bobcat compact track loaders use a grease cylinder tensioning system. Never use pry bars. Instead, add or release grease through the tensioning valve using a standard grease gun. If you're unsure, give us a call, we’ll walk you through it or stop by to assist.
7. Let Our Team Handle It
